MP's join the 'Leaky Loo' debate

Sonia Kumar MP Champions Campaign to End the Leaky Loo Crisis

Following her recent visit to Thomas Dudley’s head office and manufacturing facility in Dudley, Sonia Kumar MP has pledged her support for the campaign to tackle the growing issue of leaking toilets - commonly referred to as the “Leaky Loo” crisis.

Across the UK, it is estimated that 8% of toilets are leaking, wasting up to 400 litres of water per toilet every day. The root cause lies in the widespread adoption of flush valves, which are vulnerable to silent, continuous internal leaks often undetectable to the naked eye. These valves are replacing traditional syphons, which use hydraulic principles to deliver an inherently leak-free design. During her visit, Sonia saw both technologies first hand at Thomas Dudley, a leading manufacturer that has long advocated for higher water efficiency standards.

Recognising the scale of the problem, Sonia has taken decisive action by sponsoring an event at the Houses of Parliament. This event brought together Thomas Dudley’s team and a number of MPs to discuss the issue directly, highlighting that the crisis stems from regulatory changes introduced in 2001, changes that inadvertently allowed leak-prone flush valves to become commonplace.

Impressed by the insights shared, Sonia has authored an article for the widely read Politics.co.uk platform, calling for urgent reform to prevent unnecessary water wastage.
