Cressida Granger, Mathmos
“There is power in the British brand. We’re selling partly on quality and design, but also on heritage. The British heritage of making something here is what makes it special and what makes it premium, and part of what makes people pay a little bit more for it.”
Cressida Granger, CEO, Mathmos
Mathmos invented the lava lamp in 1963 and has been manufacturing them in Britain ever since. From hand-filled bottles in Poole to metal parts spun by UK suppliers, the company continues to make 30,000–40,000 lamps a year, building on more than 60 years of heritage.
Today, Mathmos employs around 30 people and has a strong global following, supported by a loyal collector community. By staying committed to making its products in Britain, Mathmos proves that heritage, quality, and design remain powerful assets in a competitive global market.
As Cressida says, “It’s very rare to have something made that long in Britain. So, I do feel very proud of that.”
