Made in Britain member Northern Polytunnels has donated a full refurbishment of a polytunnel to Laneshaw Bridge Primary School in Colne, ensuring their Growing Gardeners’ Club can continue for years to come.
The school’s original timber-framed tunnel had deteriorated significantly over time, with rotting base rails, warped doors, and torn polythene. Staff feared the structure wouldn’t last another winter, putting the school’s outdoor learning programme at risk.
Northern Polytunnels, which designs and manufactures all its products in the UK, stepped in to help. The team replaced all timber components with metal, installed space-saving sliding doors, and fitted a new polythene cover using a secure wiggle wire system.
“Without this, we wouldn’t be able to do it at all,” said Joanne Nutter, who runs the school’s Growing Gardeners’ Club. “This is where everything grows. It’s the heart of what we do. I can’t thank Northern Polytunnels enough. This means we can keep going, year after year.”
The new all-metal design is future-proofed for decades of use, supporting sustainability and reducing the long-term maintenance costs often associated with timber-framed tunnels.
The refurbished tunnel will be used to teach Year 1 pupils about food growing, plant care, and sustainability. The school is also planning to expand its outdoor learning area with wildflower planting and hanging baskets.
This isn’t Northern Polytunnels’ first community project. The company also recently supported the Nettles & Petals community garden in Pickering — another example of its commitment to helping Britain grow.
