Good Directions has completed a hand crafted 3D copper swallows weathervane for a property in Farnborough, Oxfordshire, showcasing the company’s expertise in traditional coppersmithing and architectural metalwork.
The project began with an indicative production drawing, enabling the client to visualise and approve the design before any material was worked. From there, CNC machined foam formers were produced using engineering grade tooling foam, giving the swallows their precise three-dimensional profile.
These formers allowed Good Directions’ coppersmiths to dress the copper by hand, following the complex curves and contours that define the character of each bird. Once formed, the individual components were TIG welded to a custom brass support structure, ensuring long-term strength, stability and functionality as a working weathervane.
The completed sculpture was finished in a natural verdigris patina, giving it a beautifully aged appearance and helping it blend effortlessly into its rural surroundings.
All stages of the build were completed in-house at Good Directions’ Hampshire workshop, combining digital precision with traditional British metalworking skills.
This project demonstrates the unique capability of Good Directions to deliver one-of-a-kind architectural features through a balance of heritage craftsmanship and modern engineering.
