Wherever the virus disease of Avian Influenza (bird flu) emerges there is a serious threat to the local poultry economy and the potential for transmission of the virus from infected birds to humans. India, in 2025, is a case in point.
This year, India has detected more than 40 cases of bird flu in 10 states although this figure is a 15% decrease from the same period on last year.
Outbreaks of bird flu in India have led to one notable human case – a child – this year. Bird flu is primarily an infectious disease of poultry, but cross species transmission can occur when humans are exposed to infected birds. The child who contracted bird flu lived in a district where no outbreak had been reported. As neighbouring districts had reported outbreaks of bird flu it can be concluded that the child contracted the infection from an infected bird that hadn’t yet been identified as infected.
Biosecurity is a vital and effective defence for minimising the spread of animal viral diseases, including bird flu. The deployment of disinfectants approved by the UK government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) adds confidence to biosecurity programmes because approved disinfectants have been tried and tested against exacting standards in reference laboratories. Mirius produces a range of products, such as Omnicide, which are examined, tested and approved by DEFRA.
