Palmstead Nurseries has strengthened its production capacity with the installation of a new seven-bay multispan supplied and manufactured by Northern Polytunnels. The structure, now fully operational at the nursery’s Kent site, marks a significant investment in expanding protected growing space for one of the South East’s leading wholesale plant suppliers.
A Major Boost in Covered Growing Space
The multispan provides a large, uninterrupted block of protected crop production area, offering Palmstead greater control over their growing conditions throughout the year.
Valley gutters run between each bay to manage rainfall efficiently, while long ventilation runs are managed through automated roll-up curtains. These give Palmstead the flexibility to regulate airflow across the full width of the structure, which is essential for maintaining steady temperatures and reducing disease pressure.
In the central bay, Northern Polytunnels installed a roof vent to support heat release from the warmest part of the tunnel. Palmstead will monitor its performance and have the option to retrofit additional vents in future. Being able to adapt the structure without major reconstruction was an important part of the brief and one of the strengths of the multispan system.
Designed and Manufactured in Britain
All major components were produced at Northern Polytunnels’ manufacturing facilities in Lancashire. This in-house approach allows commercial growers like Palmstead to access structures that are built for longevity while supporting British industry and reducing overseas supply chain reliance.
