Proud to Be Made in Britain - our first use of the Trade Mark at W. MacCarthy & Sons

W. MacCarthy & Sons Ltd has been producing luxury packaging in London since around 1880, when Liam MacCarthy founded the business. For over 140 years, our work has quietly travelled the globe, usually bearing only our customers’ branding and never our own.

Of course that is our purpose - to help showcase the customer’s product, with packaging that reflects and supports their brand. We’ve never needed to promote ourselves directly on our packaging, as our reputation has grown through the loyalty of long-standing customers and word-of-mouth recommendations.

However, after receiving Made in Britain accreditation, we saw an opportunity to highlight something we’ve always been proud of - that our packaging is made right here in the UK.  Of course, we needed to do this carefully, ensuring it was clear the mark refers to the packaging itself, not the product inside.

With helpful guidance from the Made in Britain team, we created a foiling die incorporating the official Trade Mark with the words “Packaging made by W. MacCarthy & Sons Ltd”.   With our customers’ permission, we can now add this to their packaging.  We know some of our customers are very proud  that their boxes are made in Britain and are keen to showcase this, as they know the mark promotes and acknowledges the very best of British manufacturing.

Last week, our first order featuring the Made in Britain mark went out. It’s for a valued repeat customer who requested more of our wire-stitched boxes for their elegant silver jewellery. Their logo is foiled in gloss black on the lid, and so we matched this by foiling the Made in Britain mark in the same finish, inside the tray.

We’re proud to support British manufacturing, and we hope more customers will be happy to showcase that their packaging is made in Britain, too!
