What is the importance of pin-point accuracy for proximity detection?

Proximity detection systems entail a wide spectrum of technologies, each offering varying degrees of range, penetration, and precision. While some believe precision accuracy is always superior, at ZoneSafe, we recognise that the best solution is a strategic decision driven entirely by the specific risk.

We address two distinct safety challenges: Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) anti-collision and Vehicle-to-Person (V2P) personnel protection.

To meet the unique demands of each, we strategically deploy two core technologies: Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and Active Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) across our core product range.

When pin-point accuracy is non-negotiable

We deploy UWB where pinpoint distance measurement is critical for long-range V2V anti-collision.

This absolute precision is crucial where an error of just a couple of metres in a warning distance could be catastrophic.

Here, stable distance measurement is a greater safety factor than close-range penetration because the system’s primary job is to generate a trustworthy warning far ahead.

How our V2V system achieves this through UWB:

  • Method: Direct distance measurement between vehicles using Time-of-Flight.
  • Precision: Delivers centimetre-level accuracy, ensuring warning zones are exact over long distances.
  • Architecture: Fully self-contained on vehicles; no site infrastructure needed.
  • Result: This achieves the highest V2V accuracy while maximising portability and minimising operational cost. This design prioritises precision over penetration.

An analogy of this might be a sniper rifle: it is an instrument engineered for pin-point precision, ensuring the target distance is isolated and locked with absolute certainty.

When absolute detection is paramount

Active RFID is chosen for V2P to maximise reliable detection and penetration and eliminate the False Negative risk (failing to detect a hidden person) in highly cluttered zones.

In a close-proximity environment, pinpoint accuracy is not necessary, as a driver’s unavoidable reaction delay completely absorbs any marginal gain in warning time.

How our V2P system provides reliability through Active RFID:

  • Method: Signal strength (RSSI) enables proximity and strong penetration.
  • Precision: Delivers metre-level accuracy, sufficient for the driver’s response to stop/slow down.
  • Architecture: The RFID signal is inherently designed to travel through walls and vehicle bodies.
  • Result: This superior penetration eliminates the False Negative risk, providing the robust, proactive detection necessary for personnel protection.

An analogy of this might be a shotgun: it is an instrument engineered for broad dispersal and robust penetration across a wide, cluttered zone.

A dual-technology necessity

Attempting to use a single technology for all proximity challenges will compromise either safety or deployment scalability. The ZoneSafe dual-technology strategy is built on complementary strengths, ensuring each system performs its designated task without compromise.

By combining UWB’s reliable ranging stability with Active RFID’s superior close-range penetration, ZoneSafe provides a unified system where the required level of accuracy is always precisely matched to the specific safety risk.
