A YouGov poll of over 2,000 respondents commissioned by Made in Britain has revealed clear demand from the British consumer to buy more British-made products.
Britons have a strong desire to support local industry, but they often find that it isn’t always easy to identify when an item is made in Britain.
That is where the official trademark, and growing international recognition of that trademark has soared over the years, as the polling data clearly outlines.
Headline findings from the Made in Britain Buying British Survey 2025:
- 45% of consumers feel more availability of British-made products is needed in the retail sector
- 36% of people say it is difficult to find British goods in stores
- 49% of shoppers have seen the Made in Britain trademark in shops before
- 44% of consumers say clear Made in Britain labelling would encourage them to buy more local products
- Just 11% of customers say they always notice if a product was British-made
Clearer labelling needed for British products
The key findings of the survey indicate a clear desire to support British manufacturing, but also underline a definite need for clearer labelling and marketing of a product when it is made locally.
When asked ‘What needs to be done to encourage buying more British products?’ the most frequent answer (46%) was people saying they need to be cheaper than non-UK goods, followed by a need for more availability for British products in shops (45%), and more obvious Made in Britain labelling on packaging (44%).
While it is increasingly difficult for British manufacturers to offer lower prices than global competitors, mainly due to the different laws and regulations around labour and benefits for workers abroad compared to the UK, the clear demand for more Made in Britain labelling is something all of our members can demonstrate. With a swell of support for clear labelling of British-made goods, this feels as good a time as ever to display the Made in Britain trademark logo with pride and acclaim.
This is evidenced further by the figure of 49% of people saying they recognised the Made in Britain label, compared to just 32% who said they hadn’t seen it before.
As well as this, one in three respondents said they “always or often” think about whether a product is Made in Britain if they are buying non-food goods, while just 10% of people claim they “never notice” when something is British-made, once it arrives on the shop shelf.
In the press: “British-made products are too hard to spot”
The survey has garnered plenty of interest from sector-specific outlets and the wider press, helping to amplify the Made in Britain message of supporting British manufacturing, and reporting on the trends identified by the responses to the YouGov poll:
- UK Manufacturing reported that “British-made products are too hard to spot”
- Machinery Market reported that “the official Made in Britain campaign has gained traction with British consumers.”
- And Manufacturing & Production Engineering Magazine published figures showing that 46% said they would consider buying British-made products if they were cheaper than non-UK alternatives, whilst 45% said more availability of UK-made products in shops and online retailers is needed.”
Continuing our mission, doubling down on domestic manufacturing
We can now get to work on acting on what we have learned from this insightful survey, whether it be striving to increase visibility of British-made goods in the retail sector, championing British values that support the national infrastructure and economy, or making them more readily available for consumers.
John Pearce, Made in Britain’s CEO, said of the findings: “It’s encouraging to see demand is there from consumers to buy British, but manufacturers and retailers need to do more to showcase their Britishness.
“We have thousands of members who can attest to the benefits of proudly displaying that products are Made in Britain, which means that not only are those products verified as being made here, they’re also made in line with British values and sensibilities.
“Our trademark is a clear indicator that products truly live up to what it means to be Made in Britain. I’d like to see more retailers and consumers get behind British manufacturing – and it’s clear that the public agrees.”
