UK secures new trade agreement with the European Union

Closer co-operation on emissions through linking Emissions Trading Systems will improve the UK’s energy security and avoid businesses being hit by the EU’s carbon tax due to come in next year. A bespoke arrangement also means reduced tariffs for British steel exports.

The agreement includes the announcement of the new Security and Defence Partnership, which will pave the way for the UK defence industry to participate in the EU’s proposed new £150 billion Security Action for Europe (SAFE) defence fund. Made in Britain is keen to continue connecting its members with buyers in the defence sector on supply chain engagement, following previous sessions with Babcock and NATO.

As part of the deal, in other sectors, a new SPS (sanitary and phytosanitary) Agreement will make it easier for Made in Britain companies exporting food and drink by reducing the red tape that placed burdens on businesses and led to lengthy lorry queues at the border.  Also, some routine checks on animal and plant products will be removed completely, allowing goods to flow freely, including between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The UK will continue to hold talks with the EU on the details of each commitment.

Made in Britain recently hosted an online session on exporting to Europe, the summary of which can be found here.
