By John Pearce, CEO, Made in Britain
With water shortages and hosepipe bans in the news through most of the summer months, it came as a welcome relief (and utter joy) to see Made in Britain member Thomas Dudley Ltd (TD) making such a strong and confident statement on what they are doing to help alleviate this global problem - over demand, wastage and inconsistent water supply. We really cannot carry on taking water for granted. And British manufacturers require millions of litres of it every working day.
In a groundbreaking fusion of innovation and environmental advocacy, the team at TD has launched a revolutionary syphon into space, named Quantum. This bold mission marks a world first: sending a plumbing product high above the Earth to spotlight the urgent need for action to fix the Leaky Loo Crisis. Quantum is the world’s first push-button operated, leak-free toilet syphon, and is engineered to eliminate the water wasted via leaking toilets, one of the most pressing challenges facing the plumbing industry. TD made the whole Made in Britain media team smile when we saw how BIG the official trademark appeared on what looked more like a plastic satellite than a sophisticated toilet fitting.
We cannot easily manufacture potable water; things would be much easier if we could. But we can keep raising the awareness of actions and products that help contribute to a better cleaner water environment, aided by our members’ innovations that reduce and eliminate waste.
Members like 200-year-old Doulton (makers of ceramic water filters), Bottleshower (emergency washing) and Harvey Water Softeners are just three of the hundreds of names within Made in Britain membership who are making goods to help secure a better water future for people in the UK and overseas.
And finally...
For the many Made in Britain product-spotting enthusiasts reading this column, it’s worthwhile mentioning that member Thomas Dudley can not only be seen ‘looking upwards’ towards space – you will also find their products all over the UK when you look down at the pavement. Find out more on the Thomas Dudley Foundry website. The team at TD have been making cast iron goods, including Inspection Covers for critical infrastructure, from their plant in Dudley for many years. I have to confess openly, I always try to snap a picture when I spot one – be it in London, Leeds or Liverpool, or anywhere else in the UK.
