At South Downs Gates we have been making bespoke handmade gates since 2015. We only use Iroko and Sapele hardwoods. We do however use Accoya, an Acetylated softwood which is modified Radiata Pine. All our gates are hand made in our own workshops.

Our gates are truly heavyweight. No 70mm x 70mm or 70mm x 90mm frames or 12mm or 15mm boards, this isn't heavyweight. Our frames are 70mm thick with a minimum width of 130mm and up to 150mm depending on gate size. Our boards are 21mm thick with a 10mm tongue and groove with a 'V' joint on both sidesAll our frames are jointed using 'Through' wedged mortise and tenon glued with boat building glue and Polyurethane D4. We do not dowel any of our joints as the dowels can rot and let water into the joint. Wedged mortise and tenons are one of the strongest and most reliable wood joints.

We don't offer solid bottom rails as an optional extra, they are standard on all our gates including our field style and estate gates. This gives a huge amount of rigidity and means that all gates can be used with underground automation.

We have all our hinges, hinge pins, drop bolts, gate stops and automation shoes made locally by an excellent engineering company. We supply custom made hinges to fit our curved gates. All our metalwork is powder coated for durability.

We don't sell any Tanalised softwood posts, only oak posts in full a range of range sizes. We can supply these with various top finishes.

We supply Automation kits for home installation and also offer a full installation service depending on distance.

Our after sales service is second to none. Any issues are dealt with promptly with no being transferred from department to department
