From crisis to clean water: How Deploy Tech delivered hope in Türkiye’s earthquake aftermath

On February 6, Türkiye was struck by two devastating earthquakes. The disaster claimed over 59,000 lives, leaving hundreds of thousands severely affected and displaced. The scale of destruction was unimaginable, with the impacted area covering nearly the same size as the entire UK.

Providing clean water to relief facilities like toilets, showers, and mobile kitchens or hospitals became a massive logistical challenge. However, immediate access to water was critical for ensuring the health and well-being of survivors, preventing the spread of disease, and maintaining hygiene in the relief zones.

That’s where Deploy Tech stepped in.

Deploy specialise in rapidly deployable, inflatable, low-carbon concrete water tanks designed for critical situations, including disaster relief. Their expertise in providing robust, easy-to-transport water storage solutions made them uniquely equipped to support the urgent water needs in Türkiye’s earthquake-affected regions.

Recognising this urgent need, Deploy donated three water tanks to support the relief efforts. Yet, the task of transporting these from Wales to Türkiye was daunting. To overcome this, Deploy launched a call for help on social media, which quickly gained traction.

In just the first few days, their post accumulated an astonishing 28.1M views.

The response was overwhelming. They gained:

- Government Support: The Turkish central government directly coordinated with Deploy to facilitate logistics and ensure the tanks reached the areas where they were most needed.

- Private Sector and NGOs: Numerous companies and non-governmental organisations stepped in to amplify the effort. What started as a donation of three tanks rapidly expanded, resulting in Deploy supplying 15 water tanks to displacement facilities throughout the affected region.

- Public Contributions: In addition, 254 supporters raised an incredible £19,854 through donations, enabling them to deploy even more units to the disaster zones.

- LifeStraw, a U.S.-based company, stepped in to support the effort by generously providing one of their water filtration systems for each tank supplied by Deploy. This ensured efficient and safe water purification, further enhancing the impact of Deploys relief efforts.

To maximise the impact of the tanks, Deploy collaborated closely with local authorities to identify suitable projects. Each deployment was carefully planned to ensure that the tanks were used in high-priority areas where they could provide the greatest benefit to communities.

Deploy didn’t stop there.

Recognising the long-term need for reliable water solutions in the region, they made some of their technical data and designs open source. This step was aimed at empowering local suppliers and organisations to improve water access independently, encouraging resilience and readiness for future emergencies.

Though the initial crisis has passed, Deploy's commitment to supporting Türkiye continues. By encouraging local innovation and sharing their expertise, Deploy hopes to play a small part in helping the affected communities rebuild stronger, more sustainable systems.
