Meet Guy Clapperton, speaker at the Impact Awards 2024

Guy Clapperton (pictured) is a podcaster and journalist who spends a lot of his time training people on how to talk to the media. His background is as a technology journalist, a field in which he started in 1989 – you might have seen him in The Guardian, The Times and a great deal of the national press over the years, or heard his podcast, “The Near Futurist”. He has never lost his fascination for what’s coming next.

We're delighted to have Guy join us at the Impact Awards 2024 as our first speaker. He will open the awards and explore the theme of what people have told us to expect in manufacturing. Increasingly over the years, Guy has attended conferences in which there is a “futurist”. He noted that many of these forecast what’s likely to be happening in 50 years which he doesn’t think is going to be immediately useful to him as he’s in his late fifties. He therefore frames his podcast and the speeches around the “Near Futurist” title.

Guy will finalise his content closer to the awards but he intends to point out a few fads that turned out to be nothing more than passing trends such as the promise of loads of 3D printing – compared to what’s actually happening, such as the judicious application of AI, or the expectation of “Just in Time” manufacturing in the 1990s compared to modern considerations of a flexible workforce.

Over the years, Guy has quizzed experts and market researchers to get an informed and up-to-date view of what the manufacturing industry can expect in the near future. He aims to leave members with actionable points, the right questions to ask anyone trying to sell them the “next big thing” and not to rush into it. Attendees will take away actionable framework to help analyse the technologies and techniques that are going to affect manufacturing rather than just those that will make the most noise.

We can't wait to hear what Guy has to say.
