Preserving the night sky with precision optics

Deep in the heart of Suffolk, Mildenhall Town Council champions not just its residents' needs but also the planet's well-being. With sustainability as a core value, the Council actively manages green spaces, reduces waste, and seeks energy-efficient solutions. Witnessing Suffolk County Council's successful LED street lighting upgrade, Mildenhall Parish knew it was time to tackle its own rising energy bills and carbon footprint.

Partnering with local contractor Cozens UK and CU Phosco Lighting, the Parish set ambitious goals: reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint, minimising light pollution, and lowering maintenance costs.

Solution

The product of choice was E950, a cost-effective LED road light that seamlessly replaced sodium and fluorescent lamps across the Parish. Installed efficiently through point-for-point replacements, these energy-efficient luminaires struck a perfect balance: illuminating streets while preserving the environment. Their DarkSky approval ensured minimal upward light, reducing glare and protecting the night sky for both residents and wildlife.

Results & Benefits

Energy consumption plummeted by 75%, while improved light cut-off preserved the serenity of the night sky. Residents enjoyed better facial recognition, leading to a heightened sense of safety. Importantly, ongoing maintenance costs also dipped, creating a ripple effect of sustainability throughout the Parish.

Roy Cozens, Operations Manager/ Director at Cozens UK Ltd - Electrical & Lighting Specialists, comments, "Working with CU Phosco Lighting was a real pleasure. Their expertise and the E950 luminaires were the perfect fit for Mildenhall. We've replicated the fantastic results of the borough project on a smaller scale, and the community is thrilled. It's a win-win for the environment and the people of Mildenhall."
