1000 Awnings in Less Than 90 days to Combat COVID-19

The need for mass testing during the pandemic put the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) in front of a colossal task to set up multiple test sites around the United Kingdom while still keeping staff and civilians safe. To double daily testing capacity, specially designed Mobile Testing Units (MTU) were created at the beginning of 2021 to help the government’s vital Test and Trace programme. In collaboration with TGS Automotive, Leaseplan, and Renault, The Awning Company was able to deliver 1000 awnings for purpose-built testing vehicles.

In less than 90 days, 500 Renault Masters were converted by TGS Automotive and provided with twin awnings manufactured by The Awning Company. Their team of employees worked tirelessly to complete the order in time and aid in the combat of COVID-19. The awnings were exclusively designed for their testing purpose, including secure entrances and exits and a separate walkway to isolate staff from the public. Storm bars and a steel base frame kit were designed to ensure safe and comfortable testing conditions in all weather conditions. Their layouts accommodate drive-through testing as well as pedestrian testing.

With a tight three-month timeframe, all partners had to work closely together, each fulfilling a key role within the project. These MTU’s, supplied by LeasePlan, can now be found around the UK on test sites and vaccination centres. One vehicle can store up to 1000 test kits, significantly increasing the testing capacity of the NHS Test and Trace Programme. The new MTU’s are praised by their users who appreciate the walk-through awning, giving the person being tested a more private experience and a safe area for keyworkers to carry out the tests.

The Awning Company continues to help in the demand for vehicle conversions and testing awnings for both local councils and private companies. As we navigate this pandemic, regular testing will become part of our daily lives ensuring we can go back to offices, events, and more. To keep up with these new demands, equipped vehicles and awnings will be required to drive up and down the country to carry out safe testing, vaccinating, or other laboratory purposes.

As a British manufacturer, The Awning Company is proud to have played a part in this national effort to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic. With over thirty years of experience, they pride themselves on delivering awnings of the highest standards. All products are expertly made in their factory in Bolton and bear the ‘Made in Britain’ marque.
