UnPacked with Anthony Lau, Cyclehoop

“I think you should start locally. Things made locally are simpler to source, and simple ideas are always the best.”
Anthony Lau, Cyclehoop

When Anthony’s bicycle was stolen, frustration turned into innovation. As an architect, he designed the first Cyclehoop in 2008, a simple cast iron bike lock solution that now dots streets across the UK. What began as one idea has grown into a £7M turnover business, employing 50 people and producing over 20 cycling products, including public bike pumps and creatively designed bike racks.

Anthony emphasises starting local, working with skilled British manufacturers, and keeping designs simple. Despite the company’s growth, he remains hands-on, ensuring design and brand integrity in every detail.

Cyclehoop is now expanding internationally, with a US operation, proving that innovation combined with sustainability and community impact can turn small ideas into global solutions. Anthony’s story is a testament to creativity, teamwork, and the power of local manufacturing.

As Anthony puts it, “Manufacturing can be tough in Britain, but keep things simple, keep things local, and start somewhere. We’re reducing emissions by making the product close to home…help the economy and focus on local manufacturing.”
