Apex Pumps shares its experience of Green Growth with Made in Britain

MADE in Britain member Apex Pumps has joined the Green Growth Programme and is already seeing benefits from completing the survey. Apex’s managing director Andrew Simpson (left) describes the experience.

What did the Green Growth Assessment tell you about your business?

It showed that Apex Pumps has taken the first steps down the road to green growth, it highlighted what we knew that there is more work to be done. The assessment highlights different areas to focus on going forward.

It confirmed that sustainability is something that the entire company has to be invested in, it is more than just one or two initiatives. I’m pleased with the start we have made or even realising some of our activities are circular within the business. I think we will continue to revisit the assessment to see what progress we are making.

Has the Green Growth Assessment changed the way you work?

The Green Growth Assessment has added a question to all our business decisions moving forwards: “Does this contribute to a sustainable future?” This is the fundamental question that has to be asked to make progress on sustainability. It is a question that will increasingly help to save cost by reducing consumption of energy and therefore potential exposure to the spike in prices that we are currently seeing.

How easy was it to gather the data? How long did it take you to fill it in?

The data is easy to find as an SME, there is terminology that you may have to look up if you’ve not heard of it before but that is all part of this journey.

Did the Green Growth Assessment tell you anything you didn't know?

Sustainability/net-zero is not just about energy and consumption but also wider social responsibilities and was a good chance to check over our policies and think about our current social engagement and future initiatives.

What has been the biggest benefit, having completed the Green Growth Assessment?

The questionnaire has given new focus and a benchmark to move forward on our journey to net zero.

As a manufacturer that produces a product that requires considerable energy to make and consumes even more energy over its working life the questionnaire helps Apex to realise how the company can reduce its impact on planet.
