Specification & Compliance

Are these pull handles compliant with BS 8300 and Approved Document M for accessibility?

When it comes to high-quality British-made door handles, we manufacture durable and stylish handles ranging from 19mm to 35mm, including the most common sizes: 19mm, 25mm, 32mm, and 35mm. Our handles are designed to meet the highest industry standards, ensuring compliance with Document M and relevant British Standards for door handles.

  • Handle Diameter: The standard specifies that pull handles should have a diameter between 19mm and 35mm, ensuring a comfortable and secure grip.
Clearance from Door Face: Handles must provide a minimum clearance of 45mm from the door surface to allow adequate space for gripping.
Fixing Centres: The recommended fixing centres should be at least 300mm apart, ensuring stability and ease of use.
Placement Considerations: Handles should be positioned at an appropriate height (generally between 900mm and 1100mm from the floor) to be accessible to wheelchair users and individuals with limited dexterity.
Visual Contrast for Accessibility: Handles should contrast visually with the door to assist individuals with visual impairments. A minimum of 30 points of Light Reflectance Value (LRV) difference between the handle and door surface is recommended.
Warm-to-Touch External Handles: BS 8300 states that external handles should be warm to the touch, considering different material properties such as thermal conductivity and diffusivity.

What is the minimum projection or clearance needed for DDA compliance?

BS 8300-2:2018 and ADM both say that there should be a minimum clear hand clearance of at least 45–50mm between the back of the pull handle and the door face.

This ensures a user can easily get their fingers around the handle, even with limited dexterity. This means the minimum projection = handle diameter + 45–50mm clearance. For example: If your pull handle is 25mm diameter, the projection should be at least 70–75mm. If your handle is larger (say, 32mm diameter), projection should be 77–82mm.

Are your pull handles fire door rated?

All of our stainless-steel handles are made from 304 or 316 grade stainless steel, which has a melting point of 1400°C. Although not fire tested in house, these handles are suitable for fire rated applications.

Do you have test certificates for durability (e.g., EN 1906)?

This is only for level handles or doorknobs.

Are these suitable for high-traffic commercial use?

We regularly manufacture handles for high traffic commercial properties, such as Starbucks, Costa, Nando’s and many other stores. We prioritise high quality materials and manufacture our own unique fixing kits that are strong enough to withstand intense use. We also have a well-trained Sales team who are able to advice on whether an additional fixing point would be necessary to maintain the integrity of the handle.

Design & Customisation
Can you manufacture bespoke pull handles to match my design?

Yes, we can design a range of designs from scratch. If you have a design that you would like us to base it from, please attach it onto your email to sales@ashdoorfurniture.co.uk. We have a specific page on our website devoted to previous bespoke projects that can inspire and show our range.

Do you offer different fixing methods for timber, metal or glass doors?

We have a wide range of fixing methods that suit timber, metal or glass doors. Each fixing can be adjusted to the door thickness. We also have fixings that can be fitted inside the rebate of a door. Our fixings can be countersunk or there is the option of decorative caps or roses. We offer push plates to cover any fixing details on the opposite side of a single sided door, or we have a hidden fixing.

Can you supply BIM files or CAD drawings for these handles?

We provide CAD drawings on request once an order has been place.

What finishes are available to match our ironmongery schedule?

We have a large range of finishes. Our standard handles come in Stainless Steel, Brass, Copper and Aluminium. Stainless steel, copper, and brass can be satin or polished. Brass and copper can also have a weathered, antique, or hammered finish. We provide colour powder coating and PVD finishes. Our handles can also be bound in leather. They can also have timber, either as an entire handle or as a section of the handle. We also offer bronze anodised in a range of colour depths.

Can you supply matching push plates and back-to-back pairs?

We provide both single sided and back-to-back pairs of handles. We can manufacture matching push plates in any finish. If you could rather have a hidden fix on your single sided handle, that is possible with an F11 or F11A fixing kit.

Practical Installation
What fixing centres do you recommend?

The fixing centres are completely up to your discretion. We make every handle made to measure so specific measurements are no problem. This helps with replacing existing handles on a project or ensuring a handle fits perfectly with your vision. Each handle has a minimum and maximum centre length on the data sheet but longer handles can be manufactured with an additional fixing point to maintain strength.

Do you supply back-to-back fixings?

Our fixing systems are designed to work perfectly with timber, metal, and glass doors, and can be tailored to fit varying door thicknesses. We also offer rebate fixings for a flush, seamless look. Choose from countersunk fixings, decorative caps, or elegant roses to suit your style. For single-sided pull handles, we can supply push plates to neatly cover visible fixings, or a completely hidden fixing for a clean finish.

Are the handles suitable for external installation (e.g., marine-grade stainless steel)?

We can provide 316 grade stainless steel which is appropriate for marine and coastal environments. It’s highly resistant to saltwater, coastal air, and harsh weather, so it’s the standard choice for external doors, seaside locations, swimming pools, and high-humidity areas. We also can manufacture in solid bar, rather than tubular, if required.

What’s the lead time for custom sizes?

All of our handles are manufactured to order; we do not hold any stock. Our standard lead time is 10-15 working days but this can decrease if we have the capacity to manufacture the handle faster. Bespoke projects or particularly unique projects may require an extended lead time, but this will be communicated to you when placing the order.

Project Logistics
Do you have standard details for specifying these handles in tender packages?

We provide a unique quote for each project with the exact specifications that you require. We can also provide a CAD drawing upon order, if needed.

What’s your typical delivery time?

All of our handles are manufactured to order; we do not hold any stock. Our standard lead time is 10-15 working days but this can decrease if we have the capacity to manufacture the handle faster. Bespoke projects or particularly unique projects may require an extended lead time, but this will be communicated to you when placing the order.

Do you have stock for large contract orders?

We do not hold pull handles in stock, but we have a large reserve of materials to quickly manufacture large contracts. Our team are skilled at prioritising workloads to keep manufacturing speeds high, whilst maintaining quality. We have experience of producing many large volume projects for new high-rise buildings or renovations.

Can you provide samples for approval?

We can provide samples of our finishes on request, and we also produce sample handles for you to get a shape and feel of the project.
