Board Chairman assesses CSR vs ESG

Made in Britain's Chairman, Professor Chris Harrop OBE (pictured, left), has shared his insights on ESG and CSR in the May issue of North West Business Insider.

In the article, Professor Harrop, who as well as being Made in Britain Chairman, is the group director of ESG at the natural stone and concrete manufacturer, Marshalls, says businesses need to understand the impact of major trends such as climate change, biodiversity loss, social inequality, and the rise of AI are having on their operations.

Professor Harrop states, "Clearly this must be done from a risk perspective, but it is far better to use the understanding from this analysis to create, innovate and find new opportunities".

He continues, "Manufacturers can measure and communicate the environmental impact of the products via the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) method." PCF considers the entire life cycle, including extraction, production, final consumption, and disposal.

He adds, "There are several ISO standards relating to PCFs that are fundamentally important – ISO 14067, for example, which outlines steps for assessing the carbon footprint of a product – in helping organisations improve their sustainability practices and reduce the environmental impact of the products they make and sell."
