CardsSafe Ltd. has been working with UK-based pubs for over twenty years. The system allows staff to keep customer food and drink tabs securely and enables them to upsell in the process.
CardsSafe is also utilised to reduce and protect against dine-and-dash and credit card fraud and to reassure customers that their cards are being used securely and professionally.
CardSafe and Young’s Pubs
The Young’s partnership with CardsSafe began in April 2005 with the Founders Arms on Bankside, London, followed by the Marlborough in Richmond. Most managed outlets were added during 2008 and 2009. The Geronimo outlets were all fitted with the CardsSafe system after Young’s acquired them in 2015 and 2016.
CardsSafe was asked to install card units to secure customers’ bank cards while they enjoyed the facilities to ensure seamless food and drink tabs across Young’s pubs and inns. With card and identity fraud often a risk and CardsSafe offering a solution to the problem, the partnership continues to provide security to customers, giving them peace of mind with every transaction.
Bar manager Timothy explains, “Average spending is up, and chargeback has virtually disappeared after we installed CardsSafe, which really puts our customers’ minds at rest.”
CardSafe and The Deers Hut
The CardsSafe system was first installed at The Deers Hut in early 2013 to help with a large volume of indoor and outdoor customers’ bar tabs. It was established to seamlessly and securely manage customers’ payment cards and ensure that tabs correlated to the right customer.
One of The Deers Hut’s most significant challenges when keeping tabs was always their sizeable and hugely popular outdoor facilities. Staying on top of where their customers were seated was soon resolved, and additional CardsSafe systems were installed to eliminate dine-and-dash and dispel potential disputes over tabs or table numbers.
Director Debbie said, “The CardsSafe system is great for servicing customers who enjoy our outside areas.”
Deterring Dine-and-Dash
A recent study conducted on 2,000 adults in the UK stated that 1 in 20 have left a restaurant without paying in the past. Up to 25% of participants said they consider leaving without paying when it takes too long for the bill to arrive. The usual transaction process in the pub sector allows patrons to dine and settle their bills at the end of the meal. This offers customer convenience but leaves the venue open to the possibility of the customer running off without paying. This type of theft is known as dine-and-dash. Whilst it is a crime punishable by UK law, fighting for losses is often time-consuming and stressful and requires substantial evidence in the form of CCTV footage or eyewitnesses. This issue can occur in any pub or bar, from high turnover and low price points to premium establishments where bills cost hundreds of pounds.
Just one *£120 walkout is the equivalent of one ten-card CardsSafe unit per year. With CardsSafe, the potential to prevent thousands of pounds of loss is significant.
To prevent dine-and-dash, staff simply retain the customer’s card on arrival and exchange it for a unique key. The card is safely stored away in a CardsSafe unit, offering peace of mind for the customer and extra assurance for the venue that the customer will find it much more difficult to make off without paying.
Because CardsSafe is affordable, larger chains and independent family-run pubs and bars use it alongside existing POS systems. The wireless system does not capture data, so it is GDPR compliant.
CardsSafe has revolutionised how businesses manage customer tabs on or off their premises. It protects assets and increases customer spending and profits securely.
