The Challenge
COLCHESTER Academy, formerly known as St Charles Lucas Arts College, is home to 648 pupils living in Colchester and the surrounding areas. Specialising in English and Health Sciences, the secondary school was in need of some sporting upgrades – this involved their current macadam multi-use game areas (MUGAs).
During the Spring of 2018 Playrite was contacted by Nick Dew, the director of Sports Surface Maintenance Ltd. Already having an ongoing business association with the academy, the company had proposed a resurfacing of the two existing macadam MUGAs. The MUGAs required a new surface that would be suitable for both all-weather use and for a variety of sports.
During consultations with both the client and Sports Surface Maintenance Ltd, Playrite’s Matchplay 2 Needlepunch was under much discussion. It being both ITF tennis certified and AENA netball approved was key to the final decision. After a period of months, Colchester Academy had decided that this surface was the one.
The Result
The installation began in September 2018, carried out by Sports Surface Maintenance and Bradley Surface Systems.
This surface, in particular, is ideal for new installations and also presents a very economical method of upgrading existing hard and macadam courts to a synthetic surface – with minimal groundwork and base work preparation involved.
With its new 3000 square metre MUGA surface, Colchester Academy has been extremely impressed with the product in terms of high-multi sports performance, durability and low maintenance. Lines were also inlaid for tennis, football and netball to make it even easier for multi-use.
The project was completed in time for the new term and can now be enjoyed by the 600+ pupils at the school.
Exclusive to Playrite, this surface was an excellent choice for Colchester Academy.
