Caithness Glass Celebrates 50 Years of Helen MacDonald, A Scottish Art Glass Icon
Caithness Glass proudly marks the remarkable 50-year career of Helen MacDonald, one of Scotland’s most celebrated glass designers, whose journey began in December 1974 as a trainee engraver in Wick.
Helen’s early years were shaped by masters such as Denis Mann and Paul Ysart, with her skills honed during a major engraving project for Scotland’s local government reorganisation. Her career took a significant turn when she moved to the Perth studio, working alongside Colin Terris and Venetian master Franco Toffolo. There, Helen developed her signature style of integrating vivid colours into her designs, a process she continues today at the Crieff studio.
Known for her intricate and imaginative designs, Helen’s work includes celebrated series such as Biblical Scenes, Fairy Tales, and Dancers. Her contributions extend beyond paperweights, with large cameo-carved pieces like the Chrysanthemum Bowl, now part of Perth & Kinross Museum’s collection. She has also created bespoke commemorative works for royals, including HM Queen Elizabeth II and HM the Queen Mother.
Helen’s legacy extends internationally, having served as a global ambassador for Caithness Glass, fostering enduring connections with collectors worldwide. To celebrate her 50 years, Caithness Glass is releasing a limited-edition paperweight inspired by her Dancers series, honouring her extraordinary contributions to the art of glassmaking.
Helen continues to design and work in the studio, driven by her enduring passion for creativity and craftsmanship.
