British manufacturer Cottam has launched a new spreader roller designed to eliminate creases in plastic film and substrates, a common cause of stoppages and inefficiencies in automated packaging lines.
Developed and manufactured in the UK, the Cottam Spreader Roller is already making a measurable impact, having been successfully adopted by a leading UK online retailer.
Creased film can cause major issues in high-speed operations, particularly where robotic arms are used to open or handle packaging. Traditional bow rollers often fall short in resolving the problem, leading to line downtime and costly manual intervention. Cottam’s new spreader roller offers a smarter, more effective alternative.
Using thousands of fine bristles, the roller gently stretches and smooths materials from edge to edge, significantly improving handling performance without damaging the substrate. The result is consistent material flow, better control, and optimised processing across the entire line.
“This is about solving a real-world problem with precision engineering,” says Marco Graumann-Frost, Business Development Manager at Cottam. “We worked closely with our customers engineering team to ensure the roller performed in live production. After a four-week trial, they moved straight to a full rollout, a testament to the impact it made.”
Cottam’s spreader rollers are built with maintenance in mind. The rollers have been designed to be retrofittable and drop into existing machinery without modification. They are self-driven by the web and automatically adjust to match line speed, ensuring seamless integration with automated systems.
