In late August 2023, days before the school year started, the government ordered more than 150 school buildings in the UK to be closed or partially closed. RAAC was highlighted as a major safety concern.
Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) is made from sand, cement, aluminium powder, and water, which is aerated during production. These bubbles can allow water ingress to enter the material, which has an effect on its structural integrity. This has led to ‘crumbling concrete’ and the risk of collapse to school buildings nationwide.
The Department for Education advised all schools with potential RAAC risk to vacate and restrict access to the spaces ensuring they are out of use until they are investigated.
With hundreds of schools impacted, the immediate disruption caused by RAAC affected thousands of pupils and families around the country. Closures affected all types of school buildings ranging from classrooms to sports halls and dining facilities.
Searching for interim solutions to enable pupils to continue to learning, schools have called on the temporary building industry to provide solutions including portable units and aluminium framed structures.
Designed and manufactured in-house and built quickly and efficiently on existing premises, we’ve installed multiple temporary classrooms to date to provide a suitable teaching and learning environment for staff and students. Built as turn-key buildings with flooring, walls, corridors, doors, lighting, electrical supply, wifi, heating and ventilation, the spaces are ready to use from the day that they’re complete.
One of our projects includes the supply of a temporary sports hall and temporary dining hall for a secondary school where an inspection had discovered RAAC. The school were able to return to face-to-face classes within a matter of weeks thanks to our fast manufacture and delivery.
From Part-L compliant classrooms to sports halls designed to Sport England standards, we’ve got you covered. If you’ve got a RAAC-related enquiry or are simply looking to expand your current educational facility, get in touch with the British temporary building experts today.
