Cyber Security Awareness Month 2023

Every year since 2004, October has been Cyber Security Awareness Month, an initiative put in place to raise awareness of cyber security. They’re a few things that you as a user should be doing to maintain security with your systems, and just as easy they are to put in place, they are easy to miss, leaving you vulnerable to hackers. Here are a few things to look out for, to ensure you’re protected as best as possible.

-          Strong Passwords

Don’t use common passwords such as ‘1234’ or ‘password’, yes, they are easy to remember, but they are also easy to guess, meaning if anyone wanted to gain access, they could, also they are easily cracked by hacker tools. Try creating long passwords with symbols and numbers, something that isn’t easily guessable.

-          Phishing Emails

Hackers are getting smarter with how they send out scam emails, nowadays they can mimic legitimate emails from your bank or social media, tricking you in to downloading what appears to be a legit attachment which turns out to be a virus. Double check your email when you looking at it, think, are you expecting an email with an attachment? Is the senders email the same as the real one?

-          Software Updates

Whether it be your OS or your anti-virus, software updates occur in everything on your devices, while these updates can be annoying and time consuming, they exist for a reason. Updates tend to update outdated things, but also patch holes in vulnerabilities, ones that hackers will use to take advantage of your system. To prevent this from happening, updating your system and other software as soon as an update is available is essential in protecting your system, from exploits.

-          Multi-factor authentication (MFA)

If you were to find yourself in a position where your passwords were accessed by someone else, then MFA would be an extra layer of protection to further prevent access. Even with a password a user is required to input further information such as, a small one-time code sent to an email address, generated by an authenticator app, or through text message. MFA is offered as a standard on our backup servers, meaning you can trust that they are safe and secure.

Now while these measures can prevent hackers from obtaining your information, they aren’t foolproof, which is why you should have a backup of your systems. We at Backup Systems know how important your systems are to keep your business moving, so surely, you’d do the most you could to ensure they are kept safe and protected?
