Aquatic Nutrition Specialist Doubles Throughput with the Russell Finex Separator™
World Feeds, a leading manufacturer specialising in fish food, is renowned for its innovative approach to aquatic nutrition. Committed to providing fish with a complete and balanced diet, the company is based in Doncaster, UK, and has been in operation for 17 years, serving customers in over 40 countries globally.
The manufacturer develops diets for a wide range of species, from the tiniest freshwater fish to the largest marine exhibits. Their products cater to retailers, home aquarium enthusiasts, and public aquariums worldwide, including SeaWorld in Abu Dhabi. Additionally, they produce specialized nutrition for cleaner fish, such as lumpfish and wrasse, which feed on lice living on salmon.
The manufacturing process begins with human-grade ingredients sourced from the sea, including up to 20 different types of vitamins, minerals, fish meal, shrimp, squid, and mussels, all in powder form. Ensuring the precise formulation of these ingredients is crucial so that each flake, block, or pellet contains the right balance of vitamins and minerals.
However, the powdered ingredients often contain oversized particles, requiring the manufacturer to sieve them to ensure reliable and consistent extrusion into pellets and other forms.
When World Feeds began operations in 2005, it used an outdated unit to grade and screen raw ingredients. As the business expanded, this unit could no longer meet customer demands. Consequently, World Feeds invested in a Finex Separator™ to manage the increased volumes. Within two years, continued growth necessitated the addition of a second machine.
The new vibratory separator has more than doubled the flow rate compared to the old unit. Previously, operators filled the machine using scoops, but now they can add 25-kilogram bags of ingredients, significantly streamlining the production process.
