External Shading Frost Protection

The temperature is dropping as we approach winter, we have already experienced an unexpected fall of snow, the Met Office’s long range forecast states that temperatures may be slightly above average for this time of the year but that doesn’t mean you should not be ready, as we all know the British weather can be quite unpredictable at times. Preparation is key and we need to take precautions to ensure minimal disruption during these cold months of the year.

Some of our clients may be concerned about their external shading systems during the frosty season and we want to provide some reassurance. Our innovative and robust solutions have been specially engineered for external purposes, constructed using the finest and most resilient materials, making them the toughest in the industry to combat weather conditions.

However, frost is an element that can cause some damage, freezing the aluminium profiles and weather seals together, so we strongly recommend that you keep external roller and roof blinds as well as garden awnings retracted and protected within the cassettes, at least until the temperatures are above sub-zero. The same applies to the roof louvers of the Outdoor Living Pod™, each louver has a weather seal and to ensure that they stay intact and keep the roof waterproof, refrain from opening the louvers until the frost has passed.

Snow can cause increased levels of glare caused by a combination of sun light reflecting from the white of the snow, this is where our exterior blinds and retractable awnings are effective at eliminating this problem, however if the snow starts to fall then we would recommend retracting the shading system immediately. Snow can build up quickly, sitting on the fabric and creating weight which can potentially cause damage to the mechanisms and material.

For peace of mind, a rain/snow sensor can be easily fitted which will detect the snow and retract the awning or blind back into its protective aluminium cassette casing. Furthermore, a TaHoma Smart Home Hub can be integrated to all your shading solutions which will give you control via a smart phone, allowing you to deploy and retract your blinds or awnings from any location, perfect for when you are out and about or forgetful.

As for our All-Weather Outdoor Living Pod™, snow poses no threat as the snow load capacity of the louvered roof is 75kg per square meter, which means this pergola can be used all year round, with optional LED light and infrared heating your outdoor living moments will never have to end with winter.
