Floreon has been awarded the prestigious Innovation in Bioplastics Award 2024 by the US Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) for its revolutionary plant-based, flame retardant, halogen-free polymer, Therma-Tech. This groundbreaking material is designed for high-performance engineering applications and marks a significant advancement in the bioplastics sector.
The accolade highlights Floreon Therma-Tech’s extensive potential across various global industries, including construction, transportation, electronics, and safety equipment. Previously, the market lacked a bioplastic with proven fire retardancy, as traditional halogenated additives complicate recycling and pose environmental concerns. Floreon’s Therma-Tech is the first halogen-free polylactic acid (PLA) compound to achieve the UL94V-0 rating, certifying its safety for use in devices and appliances.
Patrick Krieger, Vice President of Sustainability at PLASTICS, praised Floreon, stating, “Innovation is about providing people with more options. Floreon Therma-Tech offers companies sustainable biobased materials for durable applications.”
Emerging from a successful Knowledge Transfer Partnership with The University of Sheffield, Floreon has developed three products to date. In addition to Floreon Therma-Tech, the Floreon Dura-Tech and Floreon Bio-Tech grades offer valuable properties for medical devices, toys, promotional merchandise, and technical packaging.
Floreon’s CEO, Dr. Sandrine Garnier, expressed excitement about the company’s momentum: “2024 is our year. We’ve scaled up our products, secured investor backing, and launched our first commercial application. This recognition by our peers underscores the technology's potential.” She emphasised that winning the award reflects the team’s commitment to innovation and advancing high-performance bioplastics.
Floreon’s biopolymers provide a sustainable alternative to fossil-based styrenic polymers, with up to seven times lower carbon emissions while maintaining or exceeding traditional performance standards. Sandrine added, “We are proud to lead bioplastic advancements, providing eco-friendly solutions for a greener future.”
Floreon’s technology enhances the durability of PLA, traditionally limited to single-use items, making it suitable for diverse applications in automotive, marine, aviation, electronics, construction, medical, and sports equipment. Therma-Tech addresses the flammability issues of PLA while ensuring recyclability, utilising over 75% renewable content and offering a significantly reduced carbon footprint with energy savings from lower processing temperatures.
Recently, Floreon secured a £2.25M investment from Northern Gritstone and CPI, furthering its mission to transform the bioplastics industry. We invite those interested in sustainable PLA solutions to visit us on Stand W192 at the Advanced Engineering Show on October 30-31 at the NEC in Birmingham, UK. Also do not miss Dr. Andrew Gill (Floreon's Technical Director) on the stage as speaker at the show discussing the latest innovations in bioplastics.
