From garden shed to Best Product Innovation at Construction News Awards 2024

For Green Rhino’s Managing Director Ross Atkin, winning the Construction News Award for Best Product Innovation was a milestone achievement that highlighted the company's journey and commitment to excellence.

Atkin began the business in his garden shed, seeking a commercial application for smart polymers that convert oils and fuels into a non-hazardous solid. After navigating numerous challenges, he invented the EnviroPad, the award-winning product that has set new standards for pollution prevention in the construction industry.

Today, Green Rhino operates from a modern manufacturing facility in Ipswich, exporting its range of pollution prevention products worldwide.

After face-to-face review by a panel of 100+ expert judges, Green Rhino won in a category with 12 shortlisted products. Explaining why Green Rhino was chosen, the judges said:

“Clearly a long term commitment to developing the EnviroPad over 20 years, as well as adapting for new pollutants. Innovation has resulted in a product that is very simple to use and produces a new way of solving the problem of onsite pollutant drips, spills and accidents. There has clearly been a long road of R&D that has required resilience to perfect the product and evolve it to handle new challenges. We are excited to see that this can also be used beyond construction. Their passion and enthusiasm was clear in the presentation.”

Atkin views the award as a testament to the company's dedication to innovation:

“The industry was crying out for a better solution to spill control, and we delivered it. We’ve invested heavily in product development to ensure that products like EnviroPad provide a significant leap in performance. Innovation is ingrained in every aspect of our company, from the factory floor to the boardroom, with all staff encouraged to contribute to product discovery and improvement. I’m thrilled for the whole team that we’ve received this recognition for EnviroPad."

He continued, "We know the industry shares our ambition to make construction sites cleaner, and we’re delighted to be seen as a partner that leading contractors want to work with."

According to Atkin, this is just the beginning:

“EnviroPad is already a fantastic product, but we’ve made it even better. We will soon be announcing a new generation of products that deliver even greater performance and value for money for our customers. We are also exploring innovative solutions to other pollution challenges and invite companies to collaborate with us for a cleaner future.”
