Improving High Tip Bucket Safety
A recycling centre was using a high tip bucket on it’s JCB 427 loader for the moving and loading of paper within the recycling yard. The rig was used by multiple operatives who all had different “operating styles”. After observing the rig in action for a few weeks, BA Caulkett were called in to implement a couple of operational improvements.
- It had been noted that some of the operators were automatically turning the bucket lift speed to maximum when operating the bucket. BA Caulkett identified and fitted valves to the hydraulic line which slowed down the unit by 60%. The operator could still vary the speed within the loader cab ( but was limited to max speed).
- A steel guard was retrofitted to prevent paper spillage when the high tip bucket was tipping into high sided vehicles
General Guidelines For Improving High Tip Bucket Safety
- Safety is the result of a number of factors. Improper or careless use of the loader-high tip bucket combination may cause serious personal injury or property damage.
- Familiarisation of the loader and bucket attachment should take place before operating, this will help youUse the equipment in a safe and efficient manner
- Avoid inappropriate damage and ensure a long service life
- When lifting loads to high levels extreme care should be exercised
- Where possible always transport the bucket and the load as low and as close to the machine as possible to keep the centre of gravity low.
- When transporting with high tip bucket raised, be aware of the environment and other hazards, such as branches, trees or any possible obstacles above the equipment before lifting the load high.
- Never leave the driver’s seat if a load is lifted or the bucket is in tilted position.
- The high tip bucket should not be stored in a tipped position.
- Before any cleaning, maintenance or adjustments to the high tip bucket where possible make sure the loader is turned off
- The high tip bucket should not be modified in a manner that would affect its safety.
- High Tip buckets when attached to loaders can be raised to a significant height.
- Do not use the bucket as an access platform or to move persons.
- Do not allow people to climb into the bucket.
- Be aware: The loader boom moves down and may be tilted even if the engine has been stopped. Never go under a raised attachment or boom or to the danger area between the boom and the attachment.
- High Tip Buckets are very heavy and no attempt should be made to move them by hand as they may tip over
- Note: Always detach the high tip bucket in a place from where it can be reached directly with the loader.
