Instinct looks for efficiencies in stacking strategy

As part of the ongoing knowledge transfer partnership (KTP) project with Aston University, Instinct Hardware is looking to create adaptable stacking system algorithms for stocked items.

Making use of an adaptive stacking system means that Instinct will be able to easily prioritise key stocked items and ensure the proper quantities of each item are ordered. This in turn means that the proper space allocation can be made for each individual item.

As Instinct progresses towards Industry 5.0 thanks to the project, digitalisation of the factory means tighter control of stock and processes through real-time data, optimization of purchased raw materials and storage of finished goods, allowing real-time ordering and distribution to take place. Sruthi Ramamoorthy will be leading this element of the project, working with Waleed Shaikh, Instinct’s Digital Production Manager and KTP Associate.

Nil Chohan, Ops, Technical and Business Strategy Director at Instinct says “This is just one element showing the positive changes that are happening from the KTP project. Whilst we’ve always been known for our excellent products, making use of the latest digital technology means we’re moving into the future at pace.

“Whilst 68,000sqft may seem a big factory space, it is in constant use, so optimizing our storage means we’re able to make the most of the storage we have. It’s obviously also important to ensure that our stock levels are maintained correctly, meaning we are able to keep lead times low for customers.

The KTP project between Aston University and Instinct is a 2-year project, looking at using new technologies alongside sustainable and worker-minded practices.
