Lighting for safe and energy-efficient logistic networks

Situated on Qatar's eastern coast, Hamad Port is a vital component of the nation's maritime infrastructure, facilitating trade and connectivity on a regional scale. Within this bustling port lies the newly constructed Container Terminal 2, a critical node in Qatar's logistics network, meticulously designed to handle the demands of modern shipping.

The strategic addition of Container Terminal 2 was designed to cater to larger container vessels, meeting the escalating demands of increased container traffic. Equipped with advanced infrastructure and cutting-edge technology, this terminal epitomises efficiency and operational excellence in maritime logistics.

The main aim of the new terminal's lighting was to match the lighting levels of Container Terminal 1 but reduce energy use through LED.

CU Phosco Lighting was invited to tender for work after demonstrating its expertise in supplying exterior lighting solutions for Container Terminal 1 and other key areas within Hamad Port.

Solution

Tasked with illuminating Container Terminal 2, CU Phosco Lighting leveraged its technical expertise to design a lighting scheme optimised for performance and energy efficiency. The installation comprised a series of high masts ranging from 25m to 50m in height, strategically positioned to ensure uniform light distribution across the terminal.

Over 200 FL810 series floodlights were chosen for their exceptional efficiency and durability, which can withstand the rigors of the maritime environment. Designed to meet stringent standards for luminance and visibility, these luminaires provide essential illumination for safe and efficient operations within the port.

Dark-sky friendly, these high-mast floodlights also ensure a limited negative impact on the surrounding environment and natural habitats, as sophisticated optics minimise spill light and light pollution.

Results & Benefits

Implementing CU Phosco Lighting's solution at Container Terminal 2 yielded tangible benefits for Hamad Port. Notably, the port achieved a significant 46% reduction in energy consumption compared to the non-LED installation at Container Terminal 1, contributing to its sustainability objectives while enhancing operational efficiency. The floodlights' excellent CRI offers improved visibility and reliability, further bolstering safety and productivity within the terminal and reinforcing Hamad Port's reputation as a cornerstone of Qatar's maritime industry.
