Lighting in Workspace Settings

The fundamentals of workspace lighting remain unchanged regardless of technological development, with the correct lux level and uniformity from a flicker free source with a good quality of light in both colour temperature and rendering the vast majority of the battle to providing a quality workspace is won, without these basic criteria fulfilled any workspace will always be compromised. Above and beyond this however there are numerous solutions that can be implemented to enhance the work environment both to create a pleasant workspace for the employee and to reduce ongoing costs for the building owner. Inclusion of controls will not only enable improved energy savings and minimise ongoing environmental impact, but can also allow for grouping of sensors and luminaires to ensure spaces are well lit even with minimal occupancy. Such systems can be extended to automate testing of emergency luminaires, centrally report failures and monitor energy consumptions reducing energy and maintenance bills. The latest wireless systems allow such systems to be implemented with minimal cost and no need to rewire buildings for data cabling.

Tunable white solutions emulating the pattern of natural daylight have long been talked of but adoption in the industry has been slow due to the high cost and lower efficiency of these luminaires. The latest cyan enhanced LED sources emulate the wavelengths of natural daylight that are critical to the production of Serotonin, these can provide a lower cost yet efficient solution for daytime workers who are not exposed to natural daylight, helping to stimulate the required hormones without the cost of a twin circuit DALI type 8 luminaire and control system required for traditional tuneable white systems which may still fail to produce these critical wavelengths. Alongside this new generations of ultra low UGR products are also available on the market utilising a combination of lensed LEDs and baffles. These designs allow for miniaturised discreet luminaire designs offering state of the art energy efficiency and often achieving UGR of 16 or below allowing office owners to invest in products which both enhance the appearance and comfort of the workspace whilst also generating a return through reduced energy consumption.

Many employers are now pushing for a return to the traditional workspace and as this expands it will be ever more critical that these measures are used not only to encourage staff to return but also to minimise operating costs.
