- Understanding sustainable business practices gives future leaders a competitive edge in tackling real-world challenges.
- Circular economies and Environmental & Social Value (ESV) assessments prove that smaller businesses can be greener and more innovative than large corporations.
- Effective communication is vital; businesses need leaders who can translate sustainability into value for customers, communities, and stakeholders.
As sustainability continues to reshape global business, students at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) are not just learning about responsible production and consumption - they are actively engaging with industry leaders to drive real-world change.
During a session led by John Pearce, CEO of Made in Britain (pictured, left) ARU undergraduate business students explored the governance and sustainability challenges facing UK manufacturers today. Discussions centred on the Environmental and Social Value (ESV) Assessment, the impact of circular economies, and the necessity of effective communication in sustainability leadership.
John Pearce emphasised the importance of equipping future business leaders with practical insights. He said: “Understanding how manufacturers tackle sustainability challenges is crucial for students who will shape the future of British industry. We need forward-thinking leaders who can innovate and integrate responsible business practices.”
Dr. Sunrita Dhar-Bhattacharjee, Associate Professor at ARU's School of Management, and Prof. Manoj Dora, a Professor in Sustainable Production and Consumption, highlighted the importance of industry-academia collaborations. They discussed how such engagements enable students to challenge business-as-usual models, develop action-driven learning approaches, and bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world applications.
As Made in Britain continues to foster collaboration between education and industry, the focus remains clear: empowering the next generation with the tools, insights, and connections needed to lead sustainable businesses and champion responsible production across British manufacturing.
