A new spin on airport retail: Gatwick’s carousel unit champions local brands

A New Era of Retail at London Gatwick: The Carousel Unit

We are proud to have been chosen by Gatwick to have designed and constructed the new retail carousel unit and be part of the initiative that offers an innovative retail platform specifically tailored to small, boutique businesses. With high visibility and flexibility, the carousel unit provides the perfect opportunity for local companies like Sknfed to display their products to the diverse, international passenger base that passes through Gatwick every day. This bespoke unit is strategically positioned to ensure that the products get maximum exposure, creating a dynamic retail environment at the airport.

This move represents a broader vision by London Gatwick to nurture local talent and provide a stage for homegrown businesses to shine in a global market. The airport, a bustling gateway to London and the UK, sees this as a significant opportunity to bolster its local business network and create meaningful connections between travelers and local entrepreneurs.

A Rotating Opportunity for Local Businesses

One of the most exciting aspects of the carousel unit is its rotational model. Every year, the retail space will host a new local business, providing a platform for various boutique brands to showcase their products to a global audience. This rotating concept creates an ever-changing retail environment at the airport, ensuring that travelers can always discover something new and support local businesses in the process.

This model is a win-win for both the airport and local businesses. Small companies gain access to high-traffic areas, while passengers are exposed to a wide range of unique, locally-sourced products. As the carousel unit evolves, it will undoubtedly bring an increasing variety of new local brands into the spotlight, enhancing the shopping experience at Gatwick and fostering a deeper connection between the airport and the communities it serves.

The Sussex Six Campaign and Support for Local Produce

Sknfed’s arrival at Gatwick Airport is not just about providing organic skincare products; it also aligns with the airport’s ongoing commitment to the Sussex Six Campaign. Led by Natural Partnerships CIC, this initiative encourages greater visibility for products made in Sussex, and Gatwick has embraced this cause by showcasing a variety of locally-sourced goods. Currently, there are 37 Sussex-born products available throughout the airport’s retail outlets, restaurants, and bars, ensuring that travelers can experience the best of what the region has to offer.

By supporting local businesses and promoting regional produce, London Gatwick is not just contributing to the economy but also creating a more sustainable and socially responsible travel experience. This emphasis on local sourcing helps reduce the environmental footprint of goods transported to the airport and supports the local economy by creating opportunities for small businesses to thrive in a global setting.

As part of its long-term commitment to supporting local enterprises, London Gatwick plans to expand the range of local businesses featured in the carousel unit. This initiative is a clear signal that the airport is dedicated to offering passengers something beyond the typical retail experience. Whether you’re a frequent flyer or a first-time visitor, the chance to experience authentic local products adds a personal touch to your journey, while helping to nurture the growth of small businesses.

The partnership between Gatwick and local brands like Sknfed is a testament to how airports can play a pivotal role in driving economic development and promoting sustainability. With more local businesses expected to join the carousel unit in the future, Gatwick is setting the stage for a new kind of airport shopping experience—one that supports both travelers and the local community.
