NHS Supply Chain is responsible for sourcing, delivering, and supplying healthcare products, services, and food for NHS trusts and healthcare organisations.

As part of our commitment to supporting UK manufacturers, Made in Britain is collaborating with NHS Supply Chain for this event to provide companies with the tools and knowledge to explore new commercial opportunities within the public sector. The session will also feature two UK manufacturing companies sharing their experiences of successfully supplying NHS Supply Chain.

NHS Supply Chain plays a crucial role in supporting NHS procurement, managing an estimated £4.5 billion in procurement spend annually as of September 2023.

This session will provide practical insights into NHS Supply Chain needs, the opportunities available for SMEs, and how UK manufacturers can best position themselves to engage with the UK’s NHS procurement delivery partner.

In this session, NHS Supply Chain will present on:

  • Access and Onboarding: Registration, portals, preferred supplier status, and routes into NHS procurement.
  • Demand Visibility: Understanding what NHS Supply Chain needs and how suppliers can align their offer.
  • Innovation & Trials: How to introduce and pilot new products or solutions within NHS Supply Chain settings.
  • Procurement Decision Factors: The role of price, sustainability, green credentials and Social Value in supplier selection.

Katie Smith-Merritt MCIPS | Supplier Relationship and Development Lead | NHS Supply Chain

Katie recently started working for the NHS Supply Chain in the Supplier Development workstream, with a focus on UK Manufacturing.
Katie has over 25 years Supply Chain experience in private industry, sectors including FMCG, Healthcare and Chemical manufacturing. She’s worked for large corporations (Smith & Nephew, Diversey and Ecolab) based in the UK & Western Europe, but also saw in early career the big push for offshoring and the challenges of establishing a start-up.

Heidi Barnard | Head of Sustainability | NHS Supply Chain
 
Heidi began working in sustainability nearly two decades ago and has built a career spanning the Manufacturing, Construction, and Healthcare sectors. Her focus has always been on helping organisations understand their environmental impact and embed sustainability into strategic decision-making. Over the years, she’s developed and delivered action plans that support the NHS Net Zero and Social Value agenda, working closely with teams to turn ambition into action. Her professional journey includes extensive stakeholder collaboration and strategy development, and she’s held senior roles that required both technical expertise and leadership. She’s a Fellow of IEMA, a Chartered Environmentalist, and a Full Member of both the Institution of Environmental Sciences and the Chartered Institute of Waste Managers.

Awais Motan | Supplier Development Manager | NHS Supply Chain

Awais started working for the NHS Supply Chain in 2024 and has worked in various Supply Chain roles for over 20 years. 
His experience is predominantly from the private sector, FMCG manufacturing. He has worked for large corporations at Regional and Global level for over 15 years prior joining NHS Supply Chain. He is now leading the SME forum to improve engagement with suppliers. 

Gavin Staniforth | Sourcing Manager | NHS Supply Chain

Gavin has been with NHS Supply Chain for nearly 9 years, Spending the last 8 as a contracting/sourcing manager. His job is to prepare and publish all tender documentation for the procurements he is assigned to, evaluate responses and finally award successful tenderers. He works very closely with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure we get the best results from our procurements. He has worked on many of the most complex tenders NHS Supply Chain have developed and to date awarded all of them successfully without challenge.


Facilitator

George Middleton | Advisor to Made in Britain and Director | MAP UK & International

George Middleton is an international trade and supply chains specialist.  He has extensive professional experience in public, private and not-for-profit sectors, in the UK and internationally. He is the Director of MAP UK & International and an Advisor to Made in Britain.  Since 2019, George has engaged privately with companies and governments across a range of sectors. Current appointments also include long-term roles with a UK plc and an executive agency of the UK government. George lived and worked overseas between 2011 and 2018, for the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and then Department for International Trade.  Before that, he managed Community Relations and Regeneration projects, for the London 2012 Olympic Delivery Authority (2008-11) and Tribal Group plc [later Capita] (2005-08).
