THE All-Party Parliamentary Manufacturing Group (APMG) devoted its February meeting to launch a new report from the Manufacturing Commission. ‘Level Up Industry’ outlines the next steps the government should take to ensure that British manufacturing is levelled up in the regions.
Among the key recommendations made by the report is a long-term national productivity target for industrial growth, supported by a strengthened Industrial Strategy Council, on a statutory footing. It also advocates strengthened support for cooperation between Local Enterprise Partnership areas to identify synergies and grow UK supply chains.
In addition to better targeting of the increasing R&D spend to maximise return on investment in the regions of the UK outside of London and the South East, the report also wants the government to enable SMEs to access the technology to improve their productivity and prioritise skills that meet the demands of the sector.
Made in Britain was represented at the APMG by John Pearce, CEO and David Osborne, managing director of member company Roman Showers. The report is available from the members’ download area in the section marked ‘Official reports’.
