Growing up in a strong, working-class family in '60s Britain, everyone around me made their living by using their hands. My Mother made shirts and suits, my Grandmother biscuit tins, whilst my Father and Grandfather mined coal in South Yorkshire's coalfields.
Always entrepreneurial, by the mid '70s I was fortunate to serve a good old-fashioned City&Guilds apprenticeship as a woodworker and tool technician, during which I realised, more than I liked making money, I loved making things! Forty years on I am so proud now to say I own a UK Lighting Design & Manufacturing business, where all our own standard and bespoke products are made in our own factory and workshops in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.
My pride is further elevated being able to use and rely on many other local and family businesses, artisans, engineers, sheet metal workers, component and material specialists, painters, platers and finishers - all within a 50 mile radius - adding significantly to our commitement to making sustainable products, and enhancing our already low carbon footprint.
We are a British manufacturing success both in the UK, and exporting worldwide which enables me to say, in the tradition of my forefathers, we are proudly Made in Britain.
