This spring, there’s a growing conversation about Britishness — what it means today, what we truly value, and how we shape a future that reflects our best selves. When we look at society and the economy through the lens of Made in Britain manufacturing — and listen to the voices of our 2,150 members — a powerful story emerges.
It’s the story of proud, resilient, and forward-thinking businesses. Companies rooted in tradition, yet driven by innovation. They're manufacturing the essential goods we’ve always relied on, while also developing new products that fuel sustainable growth, without compromising the natural world we all share.
British manufacturers are showing what it means to build a truly innovative, global, and circular economy.
At the same time, we face a critical choice. Supporting British-made goods is more important than ever, but that doesn’t mean we turn inward. Strong international trade relationships — especially with our European neighbours — must be part of the equation. While we adapt to shifting trade landscapes and potential new barriers, we need a balanced, thoughtful approach. Evidence-based decisions and long-term thinking always lead to better outcomes.
That’s why it’s time to stop reacting and start shaping the story we want to tell — to ourselves and the world. Thinking in decades, not days, is a mantra worth holding onto.
Yes, we must grow global trade in British-made products. But we must also rebuild smoother, smarter trading links with Europe — relationships grounded in proximity, mutual benefit, and shared history. These connections are not temporary; they are permanent and must be nurtured.
Perhaps the most vital skill in today’s business and social climate is recognising that two things can be true at once. We can be proudly exporting world-class British goods, building meaningful global partnerships and choosing British-made where it delivers greater economic, social, and environmental value here at home.
Maybe that’s the missing piece in the evolving jigsaw of modern Britishness.
