James Richards |Rolls-Royce |Strategic Procurement Manager, Defence Future Programmes

I have spent the past 12 years at Rolls-Royce, beginning my career as an Engineering Apprentice in the Naval business, where I gained hands-on experience in component definition and 3D modelling. Over time, I built a strong foundation in manufacturing, working with some of the most advanced engineering environments, including single crystal casting technology, before progressing into supply chain operations within manufacturing and quality roles.

Within Procurement, I started as an Engineering Manager, driving strategic initiatives in supplier industrialisation and development. I later transitioned into a commercial role as a Procurement Category Manager, where I managed Defence Partnerships and subsequently the global fabrications portfolio. Most recently, I have taken on responsibility for Defence Future Programmes, a role that allows me to combine my technical background with commercial expertise.

I am a personable and collaborative leader who values an organised, data-driven approach to solving problems and improving processes. Passionate about strengthening the UK’s sovereign capability—particularly through supporting SMEs—I am committed to ensuring we overcome technical challenges and capitalise on opportunities within the Defence sector.
