The Finex Ultima™ enables efficient separation of black soldier fly protein from bioconverted organic waste, supporting sustainable food production
Founded in 2014 and expanding rapidly by 2016, Entocycle specializes in breeding and harvesting the black soldier fly. The larvae feed on organic waste such as used coffee grounds and brewers’ grain and transform it into high-protein biomass.
This process creates three valuable products:
- Insect meal - protein for animal feed
- Insect oil - used in biofuels
- Frass - an organic fertilizer
Entocycle initially used a manual sieving process to separate larvae, which proved inefficient and time-consuming. As production scaled at its London Bridge pilot plant, the company needed a faster, more reliable method. Based on recommendations from industry peers, Entocycle implemented the Finex Ultima™, a high-capacity grading sieve from Russell Finex.
With the new separator, Entocycle dramatically increased its productivity to 1.39 tonnes per hour, reducing sieving time to just 177 minutes. This enabled the complete process, from larvae feeding to packaged protein feed, to be completed in just 12 days, a significant improvement over traditional protein sources like soy or fishmeal.
The Finex Ultima™ offers a cost-effective, scalable solution for a wide range of industries. Its robust design supports both wet and dry materials, and with multiple mesh decks, it can separate products into five distinct fractions in a single operation. This flexibility allows for greater output, improved separation accuracy, and reduced labor costs.
