Social Value in Procurement

Made in Britain recognises that Social Value has become a vital aspect of modern procurement and purchasing decisions, especially within the UK public sector and its supply chain. It’s not just about getting the best value for money, but also ensuring a positive impact on society. From fostering local employment to promoting sustainability, Social Value is about enhancing economic, social, and environmental well-being through the procurement process.

The UK’s Social Value Act 2012 requires that government and other public bodies consider how their purchases can improve outcomes for the benefit of society. However, many organisations, especially within government, are going beyond this mandate and actively embedding Social Value principles across their procurement processes. There are a range of benefits attached to doing this, which Made in Britain's Autumn Manufacturing Barometer helped to identify, including reputation, customer expectations and cost savings.

This focus has only strengthened with the government’s Policy Procurement Note 06/20, which sets specific guidelines for central government bodies to evaluate and include Social Value in their contracts.

Made in Britain is closely monitoring the new Procurement Act.

Made in Britain and Social Value

Made in Britain companies are ideally placed to offer, deliver and demonstrate Social Value.

Made in Britain is therefore increasingly engaged in promoting and supporting Social Value, helping companies understand, apply and deliver on these standards in their operations. As part of this commitment, Made in Britain has been developing strategic relationships with key governmental bodies, including the Cabinet Office and Crown Commercial Services (CCS). These relationships are designed to help members understand the importance of Social Value and how to integrate it effectively into their operations, particularly when bidding for public sector contracts.

On 11 September, Made in Britain delivered an online roundtable with Shirley Cooper OBE, Small Business Crown Representative, Cabinet Office, to discuss the new Procurement Act and the commercial opportunities it opens for UK SME manufacturing companies. By aligning with government initiatives, Made in Britain is well-positioned to provide insights and guidance that enable members to make meaningful contributions to local communities, sustainability, and overall societal improvement.

Made in Britain resources

Made in Britain is committed to supporting members in making the most of Social Value, navigating regulations, and using it as a competitive advantage, as appropriate, by offering resources, insights, and connections. Through Made in Britain’s guidance, companies can strengthen their alignment with the priorities of both public and private sector buyers, positioning themselves as leaders in responsible, impactful production.
