The benefits of school lockers - Teaching independence in education part II

Teaching Life Skills with Wooden School Lockers

In our first article, 'Teaching Independence in Education,' we explained how Classroom Lockers, Cloakroom Lockers, and Corridor Lockers help to educate students about independence and responsibility.

For our second article, we are going to explore various other ways that installing wooden school lockers in your independent educational establishment can assist students in learning valuable life skills.

Lesson 2 - Self Esteem and a Sense of Pride
Despite what many people allow themselves to believe, there are many children in the UK who are under-privileged, and have very little to call their own.  They may have to share a bedroom with several siblings - and some may not even have the luxury of a bed at all!  At the other end of the scale, a child may be the only one in the family, and could be used to privacy at all times, with several hi-tech or expensive gadgets in their possession.

What does this have to do with wooden school lockers?  You may think that a school locker is just that!  A practical piece of furniture to store things in.  This couldn't be farther from the truth.  Think back, and imagine being one of those children.  An under-privileged child, given a wooden locker to store their belongings, will revel in the fact that they have something to take pride in.  Their self-esteem will rocket, due to the fact that a teacher has provided them with a place to keep their books, coats and shoes etc.,  It is their space - which they may not be presented with in any other situation.  It may sound silly, but to a child it could be more valuable than you imagine.  So, what about the only-child who may not be used to sharing a space with anyone, and is worried about their belongings being tampered with, or even stolen when in school?  Their sense of pride will be validated, as they have a wooden locker to securely store their personal effects, without the  anxiety or the fear of losing them.  All negative feelings can have a major impact on school life, and have a knock-on effect to a child's ability to learn.  If they feel safe and valued, the chances are, behaviour will be more settled and as students, they will be more willing to take part in lessons.  Schools can play their part, by installing secure wooden school lockers.

Lesson 3 - Communication & Organisational Skills
You may be wondering - how on earth can a locker promote communication and organisational skills?  The answer is simple.  When students are stood at their lockers, it is the perfect environment to talk to others.  If a child is quiet, there is the opportunity for the person at the locker next to them to reach out and communicate.  This could make the quiet child feel wanted, and even provide them with the opportunity to make friends.  Others could communicate for reasons such as finding out what lesson is next, or making plans for lunch break.  If seating plans in a classroom are stringent, there may be little opportunity to meet new people.  Lockers are the ideal 'ice-breakers.'

Keeping lockers organised is another valuable life skill that can be transferred to all walks of life, through to adulthood.  If a locker is well-organised, students can collect the relevant books or PE kit, and be on time for lessons.  Punctuality is an important lesson to be learned.
