UK Precision Air Quality Monitor part of New York Environmental Health project

South Coast Science is proud to be part of a CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health) funded programme aiming to mitigate exposure to traffic pollutants (both particulate matter and noise).

This pilot project is creating a prototype for community-led monitoring and is motivated by research findings which show Asian American communities are exposed to higher levels of noise and particulate pollution than other communities; which is shown to have an adverse effect on health. It’s designed to be accessible and affordable for those communities most at risk due to environmental pollutants and we are hoping to start seeing results in the next few months.

The South Coast Science Praxis/Urban (the manufacturer’s flagship product) is in use reviewing data output from a network of lower-cost, consumer level particulate monitors. There is still a lot of scepticism around the data generated by low-cost monitors, many of which are not independently validated. The alternative, using expensive reference equipment, is too costly to deploy at the scale needed.

The Praxis/Urban sits in-between consumer level monitors and reference instruments, as its level of precision has been independently validated by experts (unlike a typical consumer-level monitor). Therefore its role in this project is to determine whether or not the project’s low-cost, consumer level monitors are able to deliver the data accuracy required.

Professor Charlie Mydlarz selected the Praxis/Urban for this pilot project, which is part of his work at the NYU Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) and the Music and Audio Research Lab (MARL)

“We know significant inequality exists in terms of the detrimental effects of urban pollution on public health, it is heartening to be able to support this work which aims to support those communities who are at-greater risk from the adverse health effects of urban pollution.”
