What is a Secure Information Box and why do you need one?

Your SIB questions answered

Following the recent Building Safety Regulations we have not only had a lot of demand for our Secure Information Boxes (SIBs), we’ve also had quite a few questions! So we thought we’d take the opportunity to clear a few things up.

What exactly is a Secure Information Box?

In the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, and the resulting changes to fire safety legislation, high-rise and multi-occupied residences are required (by law in ENGLAND) to install an SIB that’s accessible to firefighters in an emergency. It needs to contain vital information, such as floor plans, access routes and details about vulnerable residents, so that members of the emergency services can make super-quick, potentially life-saving decisions.

Is that the same as the ‘big red box’ people are talking about?

Yes. Some people refer to SIBs as the ‘big red box’. But the official name is ‘Secure Information Box’.

Who holds the SIB key?

A unique key is sent to the appointed Responsible Person (who is also responsible for keeping the information up to date) and the local Fire Service holds a master key (or one-key) for all SIBs, keeping the box secure and allowing access when it’s needed most.

Is an SIB the same as a Premises Information Box?

Well, yes… and no. Before SIBs became a legal requirement, they were often known as ‘Premises Information Boxes’. So a Premises Information Box is a type of SIB, and they are still sometimes referred to by this name.

So why should I choose The Safety Letterbox Company?

  • Our SIB is 100% British-made and Secured by Design certified. As with all our products, our SIBs are tested and certified to stringent security standards (STS205 Resistance Class BR2), so they are fully tamper-and-vandal-proof.
  • They’re surprisingly good value. Not only are they made from 2mm and 4mm thick steel (weighing at 22 kilos), we also offer highly competitive pricing – speak to us and judge for yourself!
  • We offer a highly secure service. Our experienced UK team always follow strict protocols for delivery; products are sent by recorded delivery to the appointed Responsible Person, with a controlled and secure record-keeping process for all issued keys, ensuring a full audit trail. And that means our key issuing process is completely secure, and fully compliant with the FIA and NFCC Codes of Practice. And you get the same very high levels of customer service with our SIBs as you do for our mail and parcel boxes.

Hopefully that’s answered any questions you may have, but if there’s anything else you’d like to know, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Just call us today on 01639 633 525 or email enquiries@safetyletterbox.com
