Ruth Smart (above) owns Tranect, which makes copper electrical connections in Liverpool. This is her story in her own words
I graduated from Brunel University in 1983. I then spent 17 years working for a number of engineering businesses before starting my own engineering business making electrical components. Today we have 20 employees, a turnover of £2.5m, of which one-third is export and we own our own factory,
Engineering has enabled me to be creative, constructive and independent. Since starting my own business I have also had control of what I do, benefited from the wealth I have created and been able to travel the world mixing business with pleasure.
My daughter studied fine art at university but went on to become a lighting designer, showing that you don't have to have an engineering degree to do engineering, just as having an engineering degree has not stopped me learning marketing and accountancy.
I am a proud woman in engineering.
