Product Description

Balustrades have been manufactured for 100’s of years from various construction materials and only recently have they transitioned to glass. As design-led high specification properties push the demand for more bespoke contemporary products, toughened safety glass has found its way into structural balustrading.

TuffX supplies glass balustrading to both large scale commercial projects and large/small scale domestic projects. As all products are manufactured in-house, complete control is exerted over the manufacturing process allowing TuffX to supply unrivalled quality and lead-times on glass balustrades.

Tuffx manufactures a varied range of glass thicknesses suitable for glass balustrades with the most common being 10mm, 12mm, 17.5mm & 21.5mm. All edges are polished as standard and we can manufacture any drilled holes, cut-outs or radius corners/shaping you require.

Glass balustrades are used for patios, stairways, balconies, fencing around decking and have many more creative uses. They are a unique and aesthetic way of providing safety to your home and garden. There are many different options available for glass balustrades to suit you and your needs.

Glass balustrades do not block out any light like other materials (like wood or metal) as balustrades are completely transparent, the natural light that they bring in looks more visually appealing than other options available. Also, they create an illusion of more space, which will benefit you if you are working with a smaller space.

Furthermore, glass balustrades are easy to maintain as glass does not require much attention. There are options available for non-maintenance glass balustrades too.

Essentially, balustrades act as a barrier and are an alternative to fencing or walls. They can be considered a safety feature, especially when it comes to balconies. The glass used for glass balustrades is toughened and thick and is nicknamed ‘safety glass’

Glass balustrades come in different types. One type is a glass balustrade that is reliant on posts, the balustrades are supported by posts being placed at certain points and the posts are made out of different materials depending on preference. The glass is attached to the post with clamps, this holds the glass into place and refrains it from falling.

Another type of glass balustrade is reliant on the strength of structural glass. Usually, this type of balustrade is clamped at the bottom of the structure in order to keep it in place, it must have a thick instalment of glass (at least toughened 15mm) fitted.

Frameless glass balustrades are another type that you may be interested in. This type of balustrade does not need a handrail attached to it however you can opt for a rail to be placed around the glass. It is a unique yet visually pleasing design using double sheet glass. The glass is attached securely to the ground to create a frameless effect.

Other options you have when choosing what glass balustrade to get fitted include curved glass, maintenance-free, whether or not you want handrails and many more to suit your style and needs.

Glass balustrades are easy to install and you will see an improvement to your home or garden in no time. Glass balustrades will instantly give your home or garden the modern makeover it needs!

Toughened Glass Balustrades

Toughened Safety Glass for balustrades undergoes a process that increases both its strength and performance, making it available for use in many modern commercial and building applications which would have been thought impossible many years ago.

With an increased integral strength of up to five times that of standard un-toughed glass, ensuring greater resistance to breakage. If however, a breakage does occur the glass will shatter in small, manageable, less harmful pieces, unlike standard non-toughed glass which has the tendency to break into large dangerous shards.

Available in the following glass thicknesses;
6mm     8mm
10mm  12mm
15mm  19mm

Toughened Laminated Glass
Through years of research and development, Tuff X have become one of the UK’s leading producers of Toughened Laminated Glass.

If you are looking for the ultimate choice in both safety and quality for balustrades, laminated glass offers even more increased strength and integrity than toughened glass. The manufacturing process for laminated glass takes safety one step further by bonding together two pieces of toughened glass with a transparent interlayer. In the event of accidental damage occurring the underlayer ensures that the shattered glass remains in place, allowing for easier and safer removal and replacement.

Available in the following glass thicknesses
11.5mm   13.5mm
17.5mm   21.5mm
25.5mm   33mm

What are Glass Balustrades?
A glass balustrade is a structure made out of glass that acts as a barrier or fencing. This structure is popular both domestically and commercially. The glass can be propped up by posts spread across the glass at even spacing.

Or there are frameless options available, in which the glass is anchored into a piece of metal on the floor with clamps. Additionally, glass balustrades can be curved around edges if needed.

The main objective of a glass balustrade is to act as a safety barrier, which is particularly useful for balconies.

How do Balcony Balustrades work?
Balcony balustrades are a barrier around the edge of the balcony, it is essential to have one fitted to ensure safety and to prevent accidents (e.g. falling or slipping off).

Balcony balustrades usually come with three components: the base, glass infill and handrail. Once they are securely attached to each other and to the ground - this creates the balustrades. It is a quick process.

What is a Frameless Glass Balustrade?
A frameless glass balustrade is a type of structure that does not require a railing or hand railing around it. The glass is firmly secured to the ground which creates a frameless effect.

A frameless glass balustrade is safe and secure, it is bolted to the ground and the glass that is used is double sheeted and toughened.

This is a popular option, as it looks both modern and elegant in both domestic and commercial settings.

What are the advantages of Glass Balustrades?
Glass balustrades are a visually pleasing and modern way to add safety to your balcony, patio or stairway. Unlike other fencing available, glass balustrades create the illusion that the space you are working with is larger than it is, which is excellent if you are working with a small space. Also the structure does not block out natural light or block out the view in front of you.

Furthermore, glass balustrades do not require a lot of maintenance, as glass is easy to clean and polish if any scratches occur. As the glass for this structure is toughened, it is extremely durable and strong which will keep you safe, and when it comes down to issues like bad weather, it will not be affected. The structure will look great every day and will be a sustainable option.

Are Glass Balustrades Expensive?
Glass balustrades are not too expensive. Each fitting is different therefore each quote is different. You can get in touch with us and we can provide you with a quote. Fill in the enquiry form on TuffX Glass’s website or call us, and we will be happy to help you.

Our pricing is based on the amount of glass that will be used, the type of glass and thickness and how long it will take to fit the glass balustrade in.

When you are reviewing the price, it is important to keep in mind that a glass balustrade is extremely durable and will be an investment in the long run due to the ease of maintenance and how great it will look even years from the fitting.

Where can Glass Balustrades be installed?
Glass balustrades can be installed both inside and outside of your home. Some of the most popular uses for this glass structure are balconies, patios, stairways, around pool areas, and many more.

Glass balustrades can be used commercially too, the structure will make your business look more modern and visually appealing. They are particularly popular for stairways and as barriers.

If you have an idea in mind that has not been mentioned, get in touch with us and we can discuss it and provide you with a quote.
