Product Description

Introducing Rubblazzo, a sustainable, eco-friendly material made from rubble salvaged from demolished London buildings.

With Rubblazzo, we aim to cause a disruption in the traditional terrazzo market by offering a material not just visually stunning and durable but also environmentally conscious. And it’s an ongoing mission; we’re committed to continuously developing the manufacturing processes to ensure Rubblazzo’s eco credentials are the best they can be.

The story

The idea for Rubblazzo began when Diespeker MD John Krause met garden designer Tom Massey during a garden refurbishment project. Whilst discussing all things creative, they started talking about potential ways of creating a new type of terrazzo, far more sustainable than the standard material. Using debris from the city they both love became central to their conversation. Rubblazzo, Made of London was born.

From concept to creation

Making a visually stunning yet practical terrazzo from London rubble isn’t as simple as it sounds! Rubble contains volatile combinations of brick, cement and stone which need to be washed, crushed then bound together to produce a robust material. Diespeker’s team of bespoke experts took on the challenge, creating many prototype versions using diverse mixtures of rubble and trialling different binders with varying sustainable credentials. It took time, but finally we are ready to introduce Rubblazzo to the world.
Portfolio

Rubblazzo has already been showcased in several projects, including the aforementioned garden refurbishment where it was used to create unusual water features, paving and garden seating.

There are a few key features to Rubblazzo:

- Each batch/project is fabricated at the Diespeker factory in Bermondsey
- All rubble used as aggregate comes from the London area (hence our tag line, ‘Made of London’)
- Every batch is unique as it depends on the composition of rubble
- The base can be dyed as required
- Rubblazzo can be used for interior and exterior projects as it won’t discolour with exposure to UV, unlike many other terrazzos
- The material can be used for a multitude of products, from a full floor (poured or tiles) to cladding, kitchen worktops, outdoor furniture and planters
