“This isn’t a job. This is far more than that. It’s a way of life, and it’s giving back.”
Claire Paxman, Paxman Scalp Cooling

Claire Paxman, Director at Paxman Scalp Cooling, shares the deeply personal journey behind her family's pioneering medical device business. The company manufactures a scalp cooling system that helps cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy retain their hair - an innovation born from heartbreak after Claire’s mother lost her hair during breast cancer treatment.

Founded by Claire's father, Glenn Paxman and his brother Neil, the system leverages the family’s refrigeration background, dating back to their invention of the ice bank beer cooler in the 1950s. Today, Paxman Scalp Cooling is a globally recognised brand, operating in over 65 markets and installed in nearly every UK hospital.

Based in Huddersfield, where Claire’s mother received her treatment, the business is still family-run, with Claire’s brother Richard now CEO. Their shared mission, Claire says, is more than a job – it’s a way of life rooted in legacy, compassion, and innovation.

The device works by circulating coolant through a silicone cap worn by patients before, during, and after chemotherapy to protect hair follicles. Results show patients can retain up to 50% of their hair, with evidence of faster regrowth.

Claire’s message to aspiring manufacturers is clear: “If you’ve got an idea that can help or improve something – go for it.” As a proud member of Made in Britain, she believes British manufacturing still holds power and promise when driven by purpose.
